This paper introduces a new open-source speech corpus, consisting of 5000 English utterances from 250 non-native speakers, where half of the speakers are children, designed for pronunciation assessment use.
A transfer learning-based approach that leverages a model trained for ASR, adapting it for the task of pronunciation scoring, and is 20% better than the GOP system on EpaDB, a database for pronunciation scoring research, for a cost function that prioritizes low rates of unnecessary corrections.
This work trains a Goodness Of Pronunciation feature-based Transformer (GOPT) with multi-task learning and shows that GOPT achieves the best results on speechocean762 with a public automatic speech recognition (ASR) acoustic model trained on Librispeech.
